What is a Sporran?

Kilts do not have pockets, so this means that there’s no place to keep your personal belongings when wearing the kilt, like money, food or mobile then the necessity for a sporran was born, a sporran is a key feature of traditional Highland Dress which is made up of leather or fur and is to choose to complement the formality of dress worn with it. The scottish sporran comes with a leather strap or chain, conventionally positioned on the side of the body against the hip. During a wedding reception or dinner dance, or any other occasion where dancing takes place, it is normal to slide it over onto your hip.

Why do sporrans typically have three tassels?

It is said to commemorate the way that the traditional sporran closures used to look, so it is steeped in history. For that reason, most sporrans will have a minimum of two tassels, but many will come with three or more. They not only look good, but sporrans allow you to proudly follow your rich scottish heritage by sporting one on your belt for all to see. Back in their beginning stages, sporrans were first seen when the sporran molach, or the Rabbit Fur Sporran, came to be in the early 18th century.

“The tassels were introduced first by the military during this time period”

Semi Dress Leather Sporran

Leather Sporran is usually made out of leather, and they will often have three tassels. Tassels are not used on daily-wear sporrans that are not being worn for any other occasion than just to go out during the day. That said, sometimes even these casual sporrans will have one or two tassels on them just to follow tradition. The reasons for the first tassels on sporrans may have been practical, but they are still every bit as stylish today as they were back in the day.

People also ask

Can you wear a kilt without a sporran?

The use of sporrans with kilts essentially roots from tradition and practicality alone. It is essential to know that there exists no hard-and-fast rule about wearing or not wearing a sporran under the Kilt. It is entirely a matter of personal preference.

What is traditionally kept in a sporran?

A sporran essentially functions as a pouch in the face of pocket-less kilts. They have been incorporated into the kilt tradition merely because the highland military used them to store personal items. Therefore, a sporran can be made to keep any things that may be needed while wearing a kilt.

Do you wear a belt with a sporran?

Wearing a belt with a sporran comes down to personal preference as traditionally metallic chains were used to hang. However, Scottish history also presents proof of leather belts to have been used for the selfsame need. Moreover, belts also offer an added benefit of versatility and comfort.

How to wear a sporran?

A sporran must always lay upon the front of your Kilt, at least a hand’s width from the top (approximately 4-5 inches from the top). Any other kilt accessories in the outfit must be centered right upon the sporran. Precisely, your sporran must be a part of a straight vertical positioning with the belt buckles, waistcoat buttons, ties, etc.
