“Tartan design acquired a national significance not only in Scotland but universally, it’s made up of crisscrossed horizontal and vertical bands or threads of colors whose variations are symbolic of the various different clans that have historically made up for the Scottish people”.

What is a Tartan Fabric?

Tartan Fabrics is associated with Scottish culture, which is a woven cloth made with pre-dyed threads to form alternating stripes in one of several patterns of plaid – The more stripes and colors used, the more blurred and soft the tartan pattern becomes.

Why Are There Different Weights for Tartan Fabrics?

Heavy Weight

Tartan for a traditional kilt is most popular in Medium Weight, but most traditional kilts in Heavy Weight. With heavier fabrics you gain greater durability, creasing, and swing, but it is literally a heavy garment. The heavier fabric is the best material to create traditional kilt, scotland bagpipes and other fashion items.

Medium Weight

Medium weight gives a good balance of warmth, crease-retention, durability, swing, and ease of wear. The medium-weight fabric is also used for kilting such as – soft furnishings, curtains, cushions and covers.

Light Weight

If you live in a very hot climate, you might prefer a Light Weight fabric, this is cooler to wear, but is likely to need more regular pressing of the creasing at the rear, and may not swing quite so impressively when moving. Tartan Skirts is made from lightweight fabric.

Black Watch Tartan

The regiment was created as part of the Childers Reforms in 1881, when the 42nd (Royal Highland) Regiment of Foot (The Black Watch) was amalgamated with the 73rd Regiment of Foot to form two battalions of the newly named Black Watch (Royal Highlanders). The 42nd became the 1st Battalion, and the 73rd became the 2nd Battalion. As the Black Watch battalion started wearing the tartan back in the 1700’s it means that the Black Watch Tartan has now been worn by the Scottish soldiers for nearly 300 years! Similarly to the Royal Stewart tartan, Black Watch was originally not to be worn by anyone aside from soldiers but this has changed in more modern times.
