Can I Wear a Kilt to Work?

When it comes to work wear for an auto repair shop, a construction site or another rugged blue collar trade, you may think of coveralls or jeans as being the usual garb, but more and more men are discovering an alternative to the traditional standard work uniform–the kilt! There are a number of benefits to Wearing a Work Kilt on the job that might be surprising to you. Here are some of them:

Cotton Kilts Are Cooler Than Pants

While we think mens kilts are cool from a style sense, we actually mean temperature when we say that wearing one is cooler than pants. If you work outside or in a hot, stuffy environment, a utility kilt will help you feel more comfortable during the day. Kilts allow your legs to feel the breeze and let air circulate underneath them. You’ll find that you sweat less and simply feel better on the job in a kilt, which can boost your productivity.

Kilts Offer Plenty of Storage

If you need a lot of gear and tools on the job, a cargo kilt is perfect for you. Cargo kilt that are designed especially for work are packed with pockets for holding small items and loops for stashing tools like hammers and screw drivers. You’ll have everything that you need to complete tasks right at your fingertips, meaning less bending to get into your toolbox and less trips back and forth to your work truck or work bench.

Kilts Are Durable

Work wear kilts are made from heavy-duty fabrics that resist rips and tears. They can be every bit as rugged, if not even more durable, than high quality work trousers and pants. At Scottish Kilt Shop, our kilts are actually made by hand, so they provide a level of quality you just can’t get with work pants that you buy in stores. Those are often mass produced in assembly lines and just don’t hold up well.

Kilts Can Set Your Brand Apart

If you’re self-employed or own your own business, wearing a kilt on the job or having your entire team wear them can be a branding opportunity. I even have seen many of us wearing kilts in several departments where they work either he’s postal workers, carpenters, teachers, house painters, artists or any Soldiers in Scottish regiments performing certain duties. Any Salesmen in shops also wear kilts. We make mens kilts in an array of colors to coordinate with company logo or colors. For all of their benefits, a work wear kilt does have one disadvantage that you need to think about before you make the decision to wear one on the job–it leaves your legs exposed.

On many job sites, this is not a concern, but if you have to wear special protective leg wear, you may not be able to safely wear a kilt on the job. Men who have to get down on their knees frequently during the day may want to invest in a pair of knee pads to wear along with their kilts as well.

As someone who loves his heritage, this has made so many fantastic points! I find that a lot of people worry about what others may think and often times feel ashamed, specially if they are not actually in Scotland. Most of my family lives in the UK and the US now. I don’t think it is a bad idea to wear them to work at all, specially if you own a business!
