Kilt outfits are about as diverse as kilts themselves. There are many different ways to accessorize your kilt outfit, and there are just as many different Kilt Jackets that you can pair with those kilts as well. There are two ways you can break down the different styles when you are deciding which kilt jackets you want to pair with kilt, and that is by deciding whether you intend to wear the kilt outfit casually during the day or during dinners and other formal events as evening wear. A lot of these Jackets can be worn for both occasions, so it is wise to start by considering which design you are most fond of.

Types of Kilt Jackets

Kilt Jacket

Prince Charlie Jacket

The Prince Charlie jacket is a classic style and most formal staple in formal Scottish dresses. The incredible jacket is steeped in history and is an iconic outfit for formal and evening events. This jacket is heavily decorated, they have ornate details like the silver-toned buttons on the tails, sleeves and front, making them more formal. It also usually has satin lapels and silk braided epaulettes. With a cropped fit, this jacket is designed to allow you to show off your kilt and highland wear with pride.

Prince Charlie jacket is traditionally worn with off-white socks, ghillie brogues, a full dress sporran, and a bow tie so we have also made the entire prince charles outfit available for purchase and hire. They can also be worn to daytime events like a day wedding and can even be worn for black tie events when worn with a waistcoat or vest.

Breamer Tweed Argyll Jacket

argyll Tweed jacket

Tweed is one of the most versatile, flexible choices for those looking for a jacket for both casual and evening wear. Tweed jacket and waistcoat is able to complete Highland Kilt outfit for events like Highland Games, weddings, parties, funerals, dinners and more. It can also be worn as a sports jacket, like with chinos, trousers or jeans. The only thing that a tweed jacket should not be worn for is a black tie event, although sometimes you may be able to get away with wearing a dark navy or black one.

Tweed argyll jacket have the same button style on the cuff that the Prince Charlie jackets do, making them better for more formal daytime appearances.

Argyll Jacket

The Argyll or (Argyle) is perfect for social or business events with a dash of formality, but not too much. An Argyle jacket is a part of your traditional highland dress for events such as weddings, dinners, balls, or parties. It is normally worn with 5 yard kilt & 8 yard kilt, but can also be worn with tartan trews. It has a gauntlet cuff, braided epaulettes, and silver jacket buttons.  which makes the sleeves a little bulky, but it is a bit more formal and is better suited for day wear or other formal day events. The Argyll jacket is a shorter than regular jacket.

People also ask

Can you wear a suit jacket with a kilt?

A suit jacket with a kilt is a big NO! In that regard, suit jackets or any other modern jackets are tailored to a length more significant than traditional kilt jackets. Rather than adding versatility as it should, a suit jacket only makes the entire outfit look sloppy and inappropriate.

Why is it called a Prince Charlie jacket?

The Prince Charlie Jacket is called so because of its royal origin. Charles Edward Stuart, the grandson to the Catholic King of England and Scotland James II, is where the jacket roots its name. Befitting its prestigious etymology, the Prince Charlie Jacket is the finest of Scottish garments and is ideally the most formal of all Kilt jackets.

How are Prince Charlie jackets measured?

Precise measurements are essential to a well-suied Prince Charlie jacket. The circumference around your chest and waist, measured from the narrowest point, is significant first and foremost. Measurements from the nape of the neck up to the waist and crown of the shoulder to the cuff are also obtained to acquire an ideal fit.

Argyll jacket vs. Prince Charlie?

Both the Argyll and Prince Charlie jackets are directly associated with formal environments. However, it also depends on how formal the gathering is. In the case of highly prestigious gatherings with no touch of casualness, it is Prince Charlie you should opt for. Argyll jackets work great for business and social events with a dash of formality but not as much as a Prince Charlie jacket.
